Hemmings Wu, MD, PhD, joined ZAP Surgical as Chief Medical Officer in 2025 with extensive experience in neurosurgery, neuroscience, and medical technology innovation. Dr. Wu is internationally recognized for his work in neuromodulation and brain–computer interfaces, with a career spanning clinical practice, academic research, and the translation of scientific discovery into clinical solutions.
Before joining ZAP Surgical, Dr. Wu served as a neurosurgeon and research professor at Zhejiang University School of Medicine. He has published extensively, contributed to international clinical guidelines, and played a leading role in advancing neuromodulation as a novel therapeutic approach for neuropsychiatric and other functional brain disorders.
Dr. Wu earned his MD at Peking University, completed his residency in Neurosurgery and fellowship training at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, obtained a PhD in Neuroscience at KU Leuven, and pursued postdoctoral training in Neurosurgery at Stanford University. He is married to Peiyen Hsiao, and together they have two children, Coen and Bay.
